During the gold rush of the 1890s on the world-famous Klondike River, sled dogs were in great demand. That is why especially big and strong animals are also kidnapped from more southern regions and sold to the far north on a flourishing black market – including the spoiled Buck, a mixed breed of St. Bernard and Scottish shepherd dog. Buck learns it the hard way what it means to be a sled dog and goes through the hands of many owners – among others he pulls the mail sled for Perrault to the most remote areas of Alaska. More and more Buck feels the heritage of his wild ancestors within himself and learns to trust his instincts. When he meets the hermit John Thornton, the dog feels connected to a human for the first time in a long time – but the call of the Wild overtakes him more and more…
